2011 HIA ‘GreenSmart’ Energy Efficiency Home of the Year

A new, airy, light-filled pavilion was added to the existing cottage in this striking renovation. The is long, narrow pavilion is positioned to maximise sunlight into the home. The angled roofs of the existing house are reflected in the new roofs with raked ceilings towards the north and clerestory windows allowing light deep into all the new living areas.

This project combines the use of a polished concrete slab with hydronic heating as well as expansive double glazing. Solar access has been maximised by the long, narrow pavilion sited on the southern boundary. The footings and slab are also insulated limiting heat loss in the cooler months. The existing residence received an ‘efficiency upgrade’ with the installation of new double glazed windows and blow-in insulation.
